Taiwan's Healthcare System
In 1995, Taiwan implemented the first universal health insurance system in Asia. The infrastructure for health care in Taiwan is dependent on National Health Insurance, which covers most of the island's 23 million people.
In 2002, Taiwan had 18,228 medical care institutions, one physician for every 632 people, and 40 hospital beds for every 10,000 people.
Physicians are well trained and it isn't difficult to find physicians who have done fellowships or other training in the United States. State-of-the-art medical equipment is often available.
Taiwan¡¯s Quality of Medical Care
The Economist Intelligence Unit of the United Kingdom rated the medical care in Taiwan the second among all developed countries and newly industrialized countries, next only to Sweden in 2000.
Taiwan¡¯s Competitiveness
The International Institute for Management Development (IMD) has just released its World Competitiveness Yearbook (WCY) 2007 on May 10, 2007. Of the 55 economies ranked by IMD, Taiwan ranks No. 18 in 2007 and dropped by one place compared with its performance in 2006. In the Asia-Pacific area, Taiwan ranks No. 5 behind only Singapore (No. 1), Hong Kong (No. 2), Australia (No. 3), and China (No. 4). Therefore, Taiwan still remains competitive in the global market.
